Outside Edge – Our Production Process

To produce metal garden furniture for you that lasts and is maintenance free, Outside Edge has to pay particular attention to the raw materials and each part of the manufacturing process. When you view other metal garden furniture websites, why is the manufacturing process not explained?  Many retailers have no in depth knowledge of their suppliers’ production methods!

Cast Aluminum Garden Furniture

Virgin Aluminium  - we only use virgin aluminium because reclaimed aluminium contains impurities that can cause cracking and corrosion. Reclaimed aluminium is also very difficult to weld correctly since inconsistent recycled aluminium will melt at varying temperatures making it almost impossible to decide at which temperature to weld. In contrast, the melting point of virgin aluminium is constant. Virgin aluminium outdoor furniture that is welded at a constant temperature will not fail.

Stainless Steel Fittings – such as on metal garden tables and sun loungers.  It is vital that the assembly fittings are manufactured from stainless steel to avoid any possibility of corrosion. We specify stainless steel grade 316, the standard ‘marine grade stainless steel’.

Nylon Feet – all of our metal patio furniture has adjustable nylon feet. This is essential because otherwise:

·         unprotected metal legs would chip allowing the elements to attack the bare aluminium

·         metal feet can cause scratching on paved or decked patio areas

·         rubber feet mark and wear quickly

  

Sand Casting Our Metal Garden Furniture

  

1.     Mold-making - A sand mold is formed by packing sand into each half of the mold. The sand is packed around the pattern, which is a replica of the external shape of the casting. The cavity that will form the casting remains when the pattern is removed. Most metal garden furniture factories will use a cheap mdf pattern, Outdoor Edge uses a much more expensive resin pattern that achieves a cleaner and sharper surface finish.                                                                                

        

2.    Clamping - Once the mold has been made, it must be prepared for the molten metal to be poured. The surface of the mold cavity is first lubricated to facilitate the removal of the casting. Then the mold halves are closed and securely clamped together.

3.    Pouring - The molten metal is maintained at a set temperature in a furnace. After the mold has been clamped, the molten metal can be ladled from its holding container in the furnace and poured into the mold. Many of our competitors use a charcoal furnace, whereas Outside Edge uses an electric furnace. Consequently, the temperature is constant – avoiding bubbling within the cast. Bubbling - think of Aero chocolate, causes metal fatigue, shrinkage, cracks or incomplete sections

4.    Cooling - The molten metal that is poured into the mold will begin to cool and solidify once it enters the cavity. When the entire cavity is filled and the molten metal solidifies, the final shape of the casting is formed.

5.    Removal - After the predetermined solidification time has passed, the sand mold can simply be broken, and the casting removed. At Outdoor Edge this step, sometimes called shakeout, is performed by a vibrating machine that shakes the sand and casting out of the flask.

6.    Trimming - During cooling, the material from the channels in the mold solidifies and is attached to the cast part. This excess material is trimmed from the casting via a trimming press.

Welding – apart from correct, constant weld temperature the bare metal parts must be thoroughly cleaned before welding. Aluminium is a very reactive metal, within minutes pure aluminium will combine with oxygen to form aluminium oxide, which forms a very thin, whitish bloom. This coating prevents the metal from reacting further with oxygen and protects the metal from further corrosion (rusting). Aluminium oxide melts at 3 times the temperature of pure aluminium, so if the oxide is present the weld will eventually fail.

Painting – Outside Edge Metal Garden Furniture uses powder coating which will last approximately 15 years. Many producers just use metal paint which starts to flake and peel off after a couple of years. Again, it is crucial that the aluminium is scrupulously cleaned, otherwise the aluminium oxide will prevail and a white bloom will eventually appear through the powder coating.

• ·         all powder coating is checked for any blemishes or cracks

Packaging – it is astonishing that some metal patio furniture manufacturers skimp on packing to reduce product costs. Why go to the effort in producing high quality metal garden furniture and then have a high return rate caused by inadequate packaging? Outside Edge only uses grade 1 mail order packaging.

Update on South of England Garden Spring Show 2012

Hello all,


The South of England Garden Spring Show 2012 is now finished.
Unfortunately it rained all weekend and my feet are still recovering from trench foot!

By Road (From the M23) :


1. Exit the M23 at Junction 10 and take the A264 towards East Grinstead.

4. Continue through the villages of Turners Hill and Selsfield Common.


5. Just before you reach the village of Ardingly you will see the Main Entrance to the South of England Centre on your right hand side.

The nearest rail stations are located in East Grinstead and Haywards Heath. Please use the Network RailTimetable facility for more information.

How To Care For Your Rattan Garden Furniture

Hand Made Rattan Garden Furniture

If you have bought some of our rattan garden furniture please read our rattan maintenance guide.


An alternative to metal garden furniture is Resin Weave Garden Furniture which will give you many years of outdoor comfort.

Our range of rattan patio furniture has been handmade to a very high standard using the best materials available. Generally there is no maintenance required except occasional cleaning. The only parts of your furniture that may need periodical checking are the screws holding the table together. Please keep your Allen Key provided.

Maintenance, cleaning and general advice

• After removing the cushions wash your rattan garden furniture with soapy water and hose off.
• do not use a stiff brush or household cleaner.
• Some fading will occur over the years which cannot be avoided.
• If you have an Outside Edge wicker patio furniture cover your cushions can be left out overnight under the cover but do not leave them out permanently during the winter or in constant rainy conditions.
• Your rattan outside furniture cushions can be hand washed at 30 C after removing the filling. Use only a mild household detergent and do not tumble dry. Leave to dry before putting the fillings back. Red wine and other similar spillages should be attended to as soon as possible using a fabric cleaner.
• If you do not have a cover, your cushions should be taken in at night and in wet weather. Whilst these cushions have  good fade resistance some fading will occur due to the sun's UV rays. Always make sure your cushions are stored indoors away from direct sunlight and are kept dry, otherwise mold will form. Storage in conservatories where sun light is extremely strong may result in fading.

8 Seater Rectangular Rattan Garden Set

• The tempered safety glass used for your table should be cleaned using a glass cleaner or soapy water.
• Do not move the table without ensuring the glass is removed first or the table is held firmly by at least 2 people. Never move the table whilst the parasol is in place.
• To maintain your parasol's good looks and to save possible damage due to unexpected strong winds always remove the upper  part of your parasol over night and during windy weather.
• Never use your parasol in the table without a parasol base. Ensure the screw on the base is holding the parasol pole securely.
• To wash the parasol cover unscrew the finial at the top and lift off the cover after taking out the ribs from the pockets. Hand wash at 30C and do not tumble dry. Put the cover back onto the frame to dry, this will stretch the cover to stop shrinkage.
• Your resin weave outdoor furniture has been made using aluminium tubing which cannot rust. Because aluminium is light it is possible that strong winds may blow over your chairs. Any scratching to the resin weave will not be covered by our guarantee.
• Please ask children not to pick at the resin weave particularly on the arms as this will spoil the look of your wicker garden furniture and is not covered by our guarantee.
• Replacement or additional rattan patio chairs, cushions and parasols can be purchased separately.

This morning  Restaurant 23 & Morgan's Bar, a high end restaurant in the heart of Royal Leamington Spa, placed an order for five 4 seater Kirstenbosch 92cm Aluminium Garden Furniture Sets.


Restaurant 23 & Morgan's Bar first opened its doors in Royal Leamington Spa in May 2006. Over the following years, the restaurant, led by Head Chef Peter Knibb, forged an impressive culinary reputation, showcasing the finest seasonal and local produce with innovative dishes.

The care and attention given to cooking the locally sourced ingredients coupled with Peter's flair, led to the restaurant being awarded two AA rosettes, and saw it featured in the National Good Food Guide with an impressive score.

February 2012 saw the start of a new era for the restaurant when it moved to a grade II listed Victorian building, merely a few minutes walk from the original Dormer Place location in Royal Leamington Spa.

The restaurant's new home features beautiful, luxurious surroundings, seating up to 40 guests in comfort and style. In addition, we have two beautiful private dining rooms, to seat 8 guests and 14, available for hire, as well as the addition of a all-new feature cocktail lounge bar.

Born and brought up locally, the owner Peter Kibb studied at The Trinity School and trained at Stratford College before completing a work placement at Claridge’s Hotel in London.


Following his placement, he was invited to join the team, working under Head Chef John Williams. Here, Peter discovered his cooking direction and set off to gain further knowledge and experience of modern European cuisine.


This led him to work under Paul Rhodes in the 3 Michelin starred Chez Nico, as well as stints as chef on board the luxury yacht "Seaborne Goddess" (catering for Cliff Richard’s 60th birthday party among others) and the Gucci family’s private yacht as it cruised the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.


Peter's travels then took him to the Michelin starred Mallory Court Hotel and also to work as a sous chef under Jun Tanaka in the Pearl Restaurant in London, before opening the doors to his own restaurant in May 2006.
